Understanding Binding Types
We produce a number of different book/brouchers types such as Saddle Stitched and Perfect Bound Books. These products are manufactured in slightly different ways. As a result, your artwork needs to be setup according to the binding type you've ordered.
Saddle Stitched
Pages
Stitched Booklet page totals are divisible by 4, supplied as a multipage PDF. Pages must run in the correct order as the finished book is printed, from front to back cover.
Cover and Text
Please supply Cover and Text (inners) sections as separate PDFs.
For example, if you are supplying artwork for an 8-page booklet please supply two PDFs. One for the cover containing 4 pages and a second for the Text containing 4 pages.
Creep
The closer you get to the centre pages of a booklet, the more has to be trimmed off the page edges. Our imposition software takes this into account. However, it is recommended that you do not have text (especially page numbers) or other live matter too close to the trimmed edges.
A gap of at least 5mm is recommended on all edges.
Perfect Bound (PUR)
Pages
PUR Booklet page totals are divisible by 2, supplied as a multipage PDF. Pages must run in the correct order as the finished book is printed, from front to back cover.
Please supply Cover and Text (inners) sections as separate PDFs.
Cover
PUR covers should be supplied as 2 spreads:
Page 1 - Outside Covers
Page 2 - Inside Covers
Spine
Cover pages must include the spine width in the trim dimensions.
Spine width is determined by page count and paper weight (gsm). Once your order specifications have been inputed a spine width will be calculated. Please include the spine width in your artwork trim dimensions.
Total Cover Spine Width = x2 single page width + spine
For example, if you order an A4 (w) 210mm x (h) 297mm portrait book with a spine width calculation of 9mm. You should set up your covers to the following trim dimensions (w) 429mm x (h) 297mm + 3mm bleed.
Text
Please supply Text (inners) as single page PDFs.
Casebound
Covers
Case covers are 10mm larger than the text pages and require a 24mm printed wraparound.
Endpapers
We produce our Casebound books with 2pp endpapers. The 1st page is glued against the inside from and back covers (see image).
You do not need to insert the endpapers into your artwork, we will do this for you. If you require additonal endpapers please be sure to incorporate them into your order specification and artwork submission.
Our 2pp endpapers are produced on uncoated stock.
